Audiovisual Technologies (Week 9)

Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to my fifth post. Today we learned the Audiovisual technology usage in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. As per the definition, audiovisual means possessing both a sound and a visual component in a single device or item such as a film or a TV program.

Examples of Audio/Visual/Digital Technologies

We discussed a few interesting examples whilst observing the evolving of technologies over the years. Based on Audio and Video Technology (Textbook Table 9.1 p 319), this is the simplified table that I had managed to come up with to show the functions and the new technologies.

Non-Projected (NP) Visuals in Teaching and Learning

In this section, we delved deeper into Non- Projected visuals. This term is defined as aids which are used without any projection. They are realistic and are a little old fashioned, but it holds a more concrete approach in the teaching and learning process.

Below are a few non - projected visuals that we can see in our schools and daily lives along with their meaning and uses.

  • Real objects – objects that can be brought into class and used as a visual aid.
  • Models – representations of real objects or concepts.
  • Exhibits – displays or dioramas that illustrate instructional content.
  • Print materials – books, worksheets, posters, charts, etc.
  • Graphics, photographs – pictorial, images to illustrate, clarify, and add interest.

Tips for Creating Successful Videos

As seen beside, these tips are very important when it comes to making videos which is a vital tool that is used in the classroom these days.

A a teacher, we must preview  the videos in test setting before sharing with our students by checking the equipment required such as the LCD projector, the required video is playable in the class and also by checking the environment (lighting, sound, seating) for viewing. In implementing videos, we must ensure to engage the learner through the review of concepts and also objectives. In the progress of the video, we should pause in between to encourage questions and discussions from students. At the end of the lesson, we must be able to structure key points and give a task to test the understanding of students and also be prepared to respond to students' reactions to emotional content (if present in the video).

Thank you for reading my fifth post. Do leave feedback in the comments section below and I hope to see you next week for my last blog post! 😃
